I got this dvd karaoke player from my friend as a gift and I absolutely love it! So why do I love it so much? Well, the first thing I noticed was that all my DVDs looked alot sharper and cleaner now thanks to the upscaling function, which changes the resolution from 480 to 1080p. Another thing I loved was that this player will basically play anything you want(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, AVI, JPEG, ETC.), not to mention the fact that it also works well as a karaoke player. The design of the DVD player itself is very sleek and stylish and looks great with my other HD components. As far as reliability goes, I’ve had this player since March and so far, I haven’t experienced any problems with it (knocks on wood). Thus, I highly recommend this player for anyone looking for a upscaling DVD player with the karaoke function. Oh…and did I mention the fact that this player is all-region, meaning that it will play DVDs from anywhere in the world!

Now i have read the other reviews for this dvd player. I have quite a few portable dvd players including panasonic. sony, and a couple others i wont mention. i also had a coby which i sold as soon as i could. i wont compare this to the clamshell portables that so many people own. although this is a good portable dvd player on any accord, it is one of the better tablet portable dvds. considering which ones you can choose from ( coby and rca), this is the best one. i have noticed a grainy picture on some dvd movies, but not all of them. the battery life is very adequate. i have gotten about a 2-3 hour charge and i ordered an additional battery from sony. the process for changing a battery requires a small screwdriver but it is possible. The kickstand is quite durable. at first i was worried about that, but it held up pretty well. With the carrying case, it is easy to slip it into a jacket pocket. i must say i love this portable dvd player and it is rapidly becoming my favorite. take this from a guy who owns over 8 portables. if you can find this item, purchase it quickly.

I used to own the Audiovox DVD Player. I got rid of it and bought this RCA DVD player. I took it to picnics, short trips and to a rock and roll concert. I never had a problem with it. The audiovox always kept stopping and had problems with it. I just need to find an adapter for my car and I will start taking the RCA DVD player on long trips. I will recomend it to anyone, I have hooked it up to TV’s and a stereo. I bought an adapter to allow me to hook it up to tv’s with only a coax input. Worked great. Nothing fancy, but does the job. Four-head VCR: A VCR requires two video heads to record a picture. This is an update of my previous review and prior update. I have had this unit now for almost two years. Overall I am still happy with it. However , with time, a few wrinkles have developed.
There are a couple of annoying quirks that we have had to get used to. Occasionally we have a ‘scene-Skip’ problem playing some DVD’s. These are usually the bargain basement type but we have also had the problem with Good quality media, major-release DVD’s. And we also see intermittent “artifacts” pop up “momentarily” from time to time.
I dont know if this is a genreal characteristic in this particular product or if its just a bug in my own machine.
Although a bit annoying, in general they do not cause us all that much trouble. If I had to replace this unit, I would probably look for something cheaper. there really weren’t many units like this one on the market two years ago, but now they are easy to find and the selection is fairly good.
I would have to say that the 0.00 we paid for it in 2001 is just too much to pay in 2003 – in fact the price has been lowered almost 0.00 since that time, but even 0.00 is a bit much with all the competition in the 0-0.00 range.
Overall a good unit but a little overpriced for the times.
Reliability may be a factor here, If the thing is still functioning well ,in two or three years, I would definitely have to say it was worth the extra $$ if that translated into the extended use.

Sherwood BDP-5004 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black)

The BDP-5004 is a Profile 2.0 player that outputs at 1080i, 1080p/60 and 1080p/24. It can also upscale standard DVDs to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p through its HDMI 1.3 output. Both Deep Color and XV Color are supported, as well as onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio high-resolution audio formats. Other features: Component and composite outputs, coaxial digital output and 2-channel analog down mix output.

It makes a little noise when loading a disc, So Be It! It takes a little time to load, Oh My! It’s tempermental and doesn’t want to play discs all the time, Really?!

Let’s address the complaints first and then I’ll tell you why you need to get this player as soon as possible. First ALL players make noise loading discs and Blu-Ray discs take a while because you are loading up software. If yours doesn’t do either of these thing well, Burah! You have a unique player. As for not playing discs all the time, Huh. The only problem I had with playback of my entire library were a couple of imports and I think that was in the mastering.

So now that that’s been settled let’s get on to all the reasons you should buy this player—–This is a region free Blu-Ray player, PERIOD. I shouldn’t have to say anymore than that. Unless you’ve just had your decapated, cryogenically frozen head thawed out after 20 years, you know all about the region debate. Distibuters have markets and in order to keep those rights DVDs got regionalized. Funny thing though, European players have had the capablility to play NTSC all along and multi-region, while the US has been stuck with our region only. Hmm. You even have a major company like Disney buying up the rights to the domestic distribution of Asian properties and puting a great company like Tai Sung out of business by theatening to sue them into the ground and then not releasing these movies in favor of crummy remakes instead. But I digress.

Foreign special editions have been around forever and I’ve been region free since players first became available (I even have a VCR that will play PAL tapes) because I just wouldn’t settle for what the US companies had to offer. So when an out of the box, region free, PAL – NTSC converter Blu-Ray player hit the market, I got it. Yes I did wait to see if the price dropped and it did, still dropping as far as I can tell.

There are only two features missing from this player that would want them to fix: Zoom and playback from last point in movie when you turn it off. That’s it! These aren’t a major concern and I don’t miss them that much. Everything else is outstanding. Upconverting DVDs so they are sharper, an easy to use set up menu and Region Free.

And about the region free feature, here is the skinny. It will play DVDs from all regions and also convert PAL to NTSC. My Malata would too but had some problem with progressive scan so that moire and edge jumping was common. Not so here, seemless conversion most of the time. Just two DVD had problems, Eureka’s M SE and MGM’s Moonstruck. The latter will not play in the correct ratio, it squeezes it to full screen no matter what setting. Like I said, it’s got to be in the discs, not the player. I haven’t any “B” or “C” region Blu-Rays yet but look forward to it. If you appreciate World Cinema you have just been handed it.

Now how to make this region free. You will have to program it and it reverts back to “A” region on Blu-Rays when you turn it off, but the programing stays for the DVD.

Codes are:
8751+0+1 is all DVD and “A” Blu-Ray regions
8751+0+2 is all DVD and “B” Blu-Ray regions
8751+0+3 is all DVD and “C” Blu-Ray regions

8751 is the program, the first number after is the DVD region and the second is the Blu-Ray. You can set to play all region DVDs by putting in a 0 after 8751 but need to specify the Blu-Ray region. And like I said, the Blu-Ray will default back to “A” (that’s us) but DVDs will stay. There are, however, DVD that demand you have it set up for that region. Had a Disney refuse to play until I set it to “1″ (once again, that’s us) and a Japanese disc to “2″. You have to have the tray empty and closed to input the code.

An alternate code is 9735 before the regions. They both work.

Maybe I come off as a little harsh but when you’re handed the world and complain about it I don’t think you deserve it. A little too hot, a little too cold. Hey, Goldilocks, stop your sobbing! Kick back, relax and save the complaining for your cel phone provider.

Sony BDP-S5000ES Blu-ray Disc Player

I just got my BDP-S5000es yesterday. I had been using Sony’s original BDP-S1 in our home theater and have enjoyed its picture and audio quality for the past 2 years. I have auditioned other Blu-ray players including the Pioneer Elite series, but never really saw or heard any clear cut reason to spend $$$$ to upgrade – until now.

The BDP-s5000es is an enormous improvement in both video and audio quality of any of the units that I have tried.

First, the picture. Stunning is the only way I can describe it. I am veiwing Blu ray movies through a 1080p projector on a 120″ screen. If there are any problems with the image in terms of color, saturation or clarity, you’ll see it with the picture that large. It is flawless. The few scenes I have been able to play so far all have better contrast, greater depth and more intensity than my previous player. In short, it looks as good as film to my eyes.

The sound is equally as impressive. Up until now, I have been using the audio processor in my Krell preamp to decode the 5.1 and 7.1 soundtracks with results that were far superior to the analog output of my older player. The downside was that I couldn’t decode the Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD signals that many of the discs now have. The BDP-s5000es has and outstanding built in decoder for these HD formats and an equally impressive analog output stage that allows for the most realistic recorded audio presentation I have ever heard. The difference isn’t subtle, but it is difficult to describe. An example of what I am talking about is in the the James Bond movie “Casino Royale”. In one scene, James and Vesper walk out onto a terrace after losing a poker game to his rival. In the Dolby Digital soundtrack, the sounds of the city are all there in the background – clear, clean and pristine – a well recorded sountrack. However, when I played same scene using the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack through the analog outputs of the 5000es, it sounded like – correction – it felt like the walls of my room disappeared and I was outdoors. It was startling. It didn’t sound like a great recording, it made me feel like I was there. The subtle spatial and sensory information that is lacking from many recordings was all there to be heard and felt.

As for the setup, it was very quick and easy. There was one small quirk that I noticed. Because I am using the players decoder and analog outputs, I needed to go into the audio setup of the Sony to adjust speaker levels and positions. The setup process went quickly enough as I was able to match all of the speaker levels up or down in 1/2dB increments except for the subwoofer. I needed to boost the output to the sub by 1.5dB but the Sony would only allow me to turn it down, not increase the level. I had to start over using the sub’s output as the reference level and match the other speakers to it. Not a big problem, but a bit strange.

The network connection went without a hitch. I plugged in the cable and it immediately checked to see if there was an update for the firmware. This is an important reason to consider Sony when making a purchase. As I mentioned, I have the original Sony Blu Ray player and after 2 1/2 years, they are still offering software improvements which allow it to work flawlessly with the latest BD titles. I have updated that machine at least 7 times (from v1.1 to v4.2), all for free, and each time the machine works faster and better. There are not many companies out there that continue to support their products with free upgrades and for such a long period of time. Most just want you to buy the newest model rather than improve your current one.

Also, I saw a previous review about the loading time and thought I’d respond. There is a setting in the setup menu that decreases the time to boot up and load a disc dramatically by leaving the machine in kind of a standby mode. I didn’t time it, but I’d say the few discs I’ve tried to play so far loaded in under 10 seconds with this mode turned on. The downside is that the unit uses more power to do this because it keeps the fan and processor running even when the power switch is off. My guess is that the previous reviewer has not turned that feature on (the default setting for this feature is “off”).

Denon DVD-2930CI Progressive Scan DVD/DVDA/SACD Player with Realta Reon VX-50 HQV Processing

Denon’s economic DVD-2930CI DVD player uses Teranex video processing for picture quality similar to more expensive DVD players. It’s HDMI capable up to 480i, supports both PAL and NTSC television standards, and simultaneous output among its component, composite, S-video, and HDMI outputs. Supported media includes DVD, music CD, Super Audio CD, CD-R/RW (MP3 and WMA audio formats, JPEG picture format), video CD, and DVD-R/RW.

OK, first off…this unit originally released in January 2006. For non-audiophiles…this is near high-end equipment. That being the case, a lot of effort was placed into its development…there’s more to gain here besides only displaying video. What’s the hidden secret? Audio.

[OK, off my soapbox...to those who complain that its too complicated or doesn't provide ease of use.]

I picked this unit up about 2 months ago, and to my surprise it greatly outperformed my Denon 1940CI. I really didn’t expect for my old DVDs to look any better.

[VIDEO]
Star Wars(episodes 4-5(remastered), and 1-3)…the ultimate test, right?! I was more than shocked at how well the REON-VX HQV scaler performed great. I was able to see some detail that I have not seen before. I literally watched all six episodes in 3 days. You will not be dissapointed in the video performance. REON’s scaler outshines Faroudja easily. Depending on your TV(LCD/Plasma), and its native video scaling ability…this next piece of advice may or may not do you any good. I have a Samsung LN46A650. Anyway, here goes…out of the box the blacks were not deep black/plasma-like on my LCD. I recommend that you toggle this IRE option, to your liking.

IRE toggle directions:
1) select ‘Picture Adjust’, by default STD will be selected.
2) select one of the memory options that can be saved (M1-M5)
3) next select option 3
4) move the cursor down to select the 3rd option below, which is the IRE setting (by default this is set to 7.5)
5) toggle this setting by moving the cursor on your remote up/down, between ’0IRE’ and ’7.5IRE’
*worked wonders for my black level, when set to ‘OIRE’

[AUDIO]
This player has Burr-Brown 24/192 Audio DACs, and AL24 processing which makes for a better than average listening experience. This is, however subjective to your receiver/amp type and speakers. When listening in 2-channel mode, the Burr-Browns make audio CDs sound great. More times than few, I hear some discrete sound from an artist’ recording that I never heard before. Simply amazing experience, to hear a new sound from a recording that you have been listening to for 20+ years. While watching a DVD, Denon’s AL24 processing does something special to audio over a digital input(HDMI/optical/coaxial). I could not believe the new sounds that I was hearing from the Star Wars movies. For example, a new voice in the background, footsteps from the surrounds. Good stuff.

[OTHER FEATURES]
DVD-Audio/SACD playback (do not own any, can’t pronounce myself an audiophile yet)…but I have heard them on someone else’ 2930 player. Awesome sound. I suppose that the Denon Link proprietary output to a Denon receiver sounds great. But, unfortunately you have to purchase a high-end Denon receiver to gain a Denon link input. Not for the moderate spending consumer, such as myself.

[ISSUES]
I would not be doing my due diligence here, if I did not mention that this player has two issues: 1) The laser has been known to give out, after some time. There are countless sellers on a certain auction site(unnamed) that can sell you a replacement. Basic ‘Macguyver’ skills are required for replacing this. 2) It will not play EVERY DVD+R/DVD-R media brand. Of the countless number of DVD media that I own…it has played about 98%, with no problem. Only the cheapest of the cheap brands will have issues.

Overall, this player is great. I give it 4 stars, due to the two issues above. Performance is a 5 in my book. Paired with a good TV, receiver, and speakers…I am certain that you won’t be dissapointed.

Sharp AQUOS BDHP24 Blu-Ray Disc Player

The HP24U Blu-ray Disc Player is a quality. Not only in image quality, which is fantastic, but also in customer support.

Available up to seven days a week with a real person talking. I had to call "support" this past Sat evening (very late). My Netflix does not play Blu-ray disc.was well. As it turned out after a highly educated lady and young patient support Sharpusa-Client, it seems my new Blu-ray Disc mustbe updated. I was very nervous because they are technically very astute. It turned out that I was able to follow his instructions and completed the upgrade on a flash drive and transferred successfully with the player.

I married this player to a Sharp Aquos TV. Great combination. I recommend this player at all only a Blu-ray for the first setting and simple remote control of time is the TV and Blu-ray control

I bought this JWIN for my parents and they like it a lot. The cool thing is that it has quite a bit of features with USB, HDMI and 5.1 channels even though I didn’t use all the features yet. What I did find amazing is that it will play any disks whether it was retail disks or those that are bought off the streets. In addition, it will read not only NTSC (United States) version of disks, but also PAL (foreign countries) version as well. It will also read MPEG and other digital formats as well. This is the only machine that I found to have all these capabilities without it being expensive. The more expensive machines I noticed won’t play PAL or disks not produced for retail sale. The only thing about this machine is that the remote control has really small buttons and I was not able to find replacements for the remotes for JWIN machines.
